Wide Open Road
Vol 59, no. 3, 1999
With
'Wide Open Road', Meanjin offers readings of the road and
landscape, accounts of movement and migration. There are
illusory freedoms in the stories of Moya Costello and Chi
Vu, layerings of history in the poems of John Anderson and
John Tranter. Loretta Baldassar reflects on her longstanding
project tracing the comings and goings of migrants between
Australia and Italy, and Tony Birch tours Victoria's western
district and finds in its designated sights and landmarks
an anxious history of absence and denial. Coral Hull's poetry
selection takes up the theme of landscape, in particular,
and is complemented by 'The Benefaction', an extended work
from John Kinsella. Also featured is an interview with noted
writer and cultural theorist Stephen Muecke, by Chris Healy.
